I love a bride who is a planner.

Lauren approached me about a year ago and asked if I would design a custom Save the Date postcard for her wedding the following January, which, coincidentally, just took place this past weekend. Lauren asked me for an elegant postcard. I think we accomplished exactly what she wanted for an upscale Chicago affair.

I am forever touting the benefits of postcards to my clients: both for Save the Dates and for RSVP inserts within the main invitation. They save money on printing, postage and envelopes. Those extra funds can be rolled into your main invitation budget or into fun details to use at the event itself.

Some might think a postcard is too informal for an elegant wedding. I love the above example in how the design is clean and content is kept to a minimum. Your guests don’t need to know everything about your wedding right away (because you are probably still working out the finer points anyway). The only details you really need to include are:

1. Who is getting married
2. The date
3. The city and state (Don’t worry if you don’t have a venue yet. That information can follow in the main invitation.)
4. Wedding Website (Not totally necessary, but a great resource for your guests to keep up with emerging details.)

These items are great for guests who must come from a distance, so they can begin making flight or other travel plans. The typical rule of thumb for sending a Save the Date is 6-8 months in advance. However, if you’re planning your wedding for a busy season (for instance, around a holiday or during the summer), a year out is not unheard of. I know I’d appreciate a heads up if you were getting married in Bora Bora. I’d need to start saving like, yesterday. (Anyone out there planning on getting married in Bora Bora and need an on-site stationery designer to make sure everything goes off according to the details outlined in the invite? I’m your girl.)

I see a lot of Save the Dates that are fun, but completely different from the vibe of the wedding and from the look of the invitation. I certainly don’t mean to step on any toes, but I am all about treating your wedding as a brand. Why not start with the Save the Date? Think of it as a teaser: give your guests a hint of what your day will be like by creating interest with the design elements that you use. Introduce images and details that can be recognized from the very beginning all the way through the reception. Like any good business has a logo that stands out from the crowd, branding your wedding is a fun way to create a cohesive event.
